## Quick result

With the default inputs (Wall length 10 m, Wall height 3 m, Wall thickness 24 cm wall (one brick, 240 mm), Openings area 4 m², Waste allowance 3%): **Bricks required (incl. waste) 3,428 blocks**

## Inputs

| Parameter | Type | Default | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall length | number | 10 | m | |
| Wall height | number | 3 | m | |
| Wall thickness | select | 24 cm wall (one brick, 240 mm) | — | |
| Openings area | number | 4 | m² | Sum the area of all doors and windows |
| Waste allowance | number | 3 | % | Cutting and breakage, typically 2-5% |

## Formula

- **Bricks per m²**: N = 64 × number of wythes
- **Wythes**: 115 mm wall = 1, 240 mm = 2, 365 mm = 3, 490 mm = 4
- **Wall area**: A = length × height − openings
- **Total bricks**: N_total = A × N × (1 + waste %)
- **Mortar**: V = A × thickness × 0.26

## Worked example

10 m × 3 m wall, 240 mm thick, 4 m² of openings: 26 m² of masonry, 128 bricks/m² → 3,328 net, 3,428 with 3% waste, about 1.62 m³ of mortar.

## Questions

### Where does 64 bricks per m² come from?

A standard brick is 240×115×53 mm with a 10 mm joint. Each brick occupies (240+10)×(53+10) = 250×63 mm on the wall face, so 1,000,000 ÷ 15,750 = 63.5, rounded to 64. That is one wythe; a 240 mm wall has two, giving 128.

### What about perforated bricks or AAC blocks?

Recalculate with the actual unit size: bricks per m² = 1,000,000 ÷ [(length+joint) × (height+joint)]. AAC blocks are commonly 600×200×200 mm, giving about 8.3 units per m² for a 200 mm wall, with much less mortar because thin-bed adhesive is only 3-5 mm.

### Should openings, tie columns and ring beams be deducted?

Openings yes. Tie columns, ring beams and lintels also occupy volume and should be deducted, otherwise you over-order. Typical rules ignore openings of 0.3 m² or less. This tool deducts openings only, so subtract structural concrete separately if needed.
