What this group solves

Weight underpins everything quoted or hauled by the tonne — structural steel, rebar, sand and gravel, glass and stone. Get it wrong and the transport and lifting plan are wrong with it: a truck rated at 30 t loaded to 34 t is an overweight vehicle on the first weighbridge.

Everything here uses theoretical weight: steel at 7850 kg/m³, stainless at 7930, aluminium 2700, glass 2500, granite 2800, marble 2700 and timber 400-800 by species. Actual weighed material differs by 1-5%, heavier when the mill rolls to positive tolerance, so purchasing and freight need a margin while settlement uses theoretical weight.

FAQ

How is steel pipe weight calculated?
Weight in kg/m = (outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.02466, with both dimensions in millimetres. A 108 × 4 pipe works out at (108 − 4) × 4 × 0.02466 = 10.26 kg/m. That factor is for carbon steel; use 0.02491 for stainless.
How much does a square metre of steel plate weigh?
Thickness in millimetres × 7.85 kg. A 10 mm plate is 78.5 kg/m². Chequered plate adds about 2.5 kg/m². Plate is rolled to a negative tolerance but settlement uses nominal thickness times theoretical density.
How many tonnes in a cubic metre of aggregate?
It depends on bulk density and moisture: about 1.45-1.65 t/m³ for medium sand, 1.45-1.55 for crushed stone and 1.6-1.8 for graded base. Each 1% of moisture adds roughly 1% to the weight. Haulage is weighed, settlement is by compacted or loose volume — keep the two bases consistent.
