Material weights calculators
14 material weight calculators: steel pipe, stainless pipe, plate, round and flat bar, equal angle, sections, aluminium, glass, stone, timber volume, aggregate tonnage and haulage.
What this group solves
Weight underpins everything quoted or hauled by the tonne — structural steel, rebar, sand and gravel, glass and stone. Get it wrong and the transport and lifting plan are wrong with it: a truck rated at 30 t loaded to 34 t is an overweight vehicle on the first weighbridge.
Everything here uses theoretical weight: steel at 7850 kg/m³, stainless at 7930, aluminium 2700, glass 2500, granite 2800, marble 2700 and timber 400-800 by species. Actual weighed material differs by 1-5%, heavier when the mill rolls to positive tolerance, so purchasing and freight need a margin while settlement uses theoretical weight.
Almost nothing here is calculated — it is tables and conversion, yet it underpins pricing, lifting and structural load: steel by theoretical mass, stone by bulk density, glass at 2.5 kg per square metre per millimetre of thickness. Get a density wrong by a factor and both the quotation and the lifting sling selection are wrong. The only rule: confirm the material and its density convention, multiply by volume, then sanity-check the order of magnitude.

Where this group goes wrong
- Taking steel density as 7.85 and multiplying by volume directly. 7.85 is g/cm³; in kg/m³ it is 7850. Skip that step and a steel column weighs one thousandth of the truth.
- Computing glass as total thickness × 2.5 kg/m². Insulating units are the sum of the two panes, not the sum of the thicknesses: 6+12A+6 is 15+15 = 30 kg/m², while treating 24 mm as solid gives 60 kg/m² — double.
- Using a flat 'one cubic metre equals 1.5 tonnes' for sand and soil. Medium sand bulks 1450-1600 kg/m³, gravel 1450-1550, clay 1800-2000, and each 1% of moisture adds 10-15 kg/m³.
- Applying 2.7 t/m³ to every stone. Granite 2.6-2.8, marble 2.5-2.7, sandstone as low as 2.2-2.4 — pricing sandstone as granite overstates it by 20% and directly affects bracket and cast-in anchor selection.
