## Quick result

With the default inputs (Number of steps 3 stages, Step width 4 ft, Tread depth 11 in, Riser height 7 in, Waste 10%): **Concrete required 0.52 yd³**

## Inputs

| Parameter | Type | Default | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number of steps | number | 3 | stages | |
| Step width | number | 4 | ft | |
| Tread depth | number | 11 | in | |
| Riser height | number | 7 | in | |
| Waste | number | 10 | % | |

## Formula

- **Volume = width × tread × Σ(i × riser)**: i = 1…steps, thickness grows each step
- **Σ(i) = N(N+1)/2**: grows quadratically with step count
- **Cubic yards = volume ÷ 27**:
- **Bags = volume ÷ bag yield**: 80 lb 0.60 ft³, 60 lb 0.45 ft³

## Worked example

Three steps, 4 ft wide, 11 in tread, 7 in riser, 10% waste: 4 × 0.917 × (1+2+3) × 0.583 = 12.8 ft³, 14.1 ft³ with waste = 0.52 cubic yards, about 24 bags of 80 lb. Total rise 21 in, total run 33 in.

## Questions

### What riser height and tread depth should I use?

Exterior steps commonly use a 6-7 in riser with an 11-12 in tread. The rule of thumb is 2 x riser + tread = 24 to 25 in, which walks most comfortably. Above 7.75 in - the code maximum - it gets hard work, and below 4 in people catch their toe. Keep the risers equal within 3/8 in across one flight or the variation trips people.

### How deep does the base need to be?

Exterior steps must bear below frost depth, or one winter of heave will crack them. The usual detail is an 8-12 in footing slab extending about 6 in either side of the steps, with the steps built on top. Steps bedded straight onto fill or a brick pad crack within two or three years - that is settlement, not a materials problem.

### Does it need reinforcement?

Steps of three risers or fewer on their own footing are often unreinforced. Four or more, or steps tied to the main structure, or long spans, want a single mat of #3 or #4 at 12 in each way placed 2 in below the finished surface. Put a separation joint where the steps meet the house wall so they settle independently instead of dragging the wall.
