## Quick result

With the default inputs (Member length 45 m, Stock length 12 m, Number of bars 1000 pcs, Allowed splices in one section 50%, Stagger distance 35 d): **Total couplers 3000 pcs**

## Inputs

| Parameter | Type | Default | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Member length | number | 45 | m | |
| Stock length | select | 12 m | — | |
| Number of bars | number | 1000 | pcs | |
| Allowed splices in one section | number | 50 | % | |
| Stagger distance | number | 35 | d | |

## Formula

- **Splices per bar = ceil(length ÷ stock) − 1**:
- **Total = per bar × count**: equals coupler count
- **Allowed per section = count × percentage**: tension zone ≤50%
- **Stagger ≥ max(35d, 500 mm)**:

## Worked example

1000 column bars 45 m long on 12 m stock: ceil(45/12) − 1 = 3 splices each, so 3000 couplers. At 50% allowed, up to 500 bars may be spliced within one connecting section; the rest must be staggered by 35d (875 mm for Φ25).

## Questions

### Why stagger splices instead of joining all at one section?

A splice is weaker than the bar itself. Concentrating them creates one plane where every bar is weakened at once - a built-in failure surface. Staggering makes the bars hand over load at different points along the length, so any section loses only part of its capacity.

### Mechanical splices versus welding or lapping?

Couplers are the most reliable - joint strength can match the parent bar - and are independent of weather and welder skill, which suits bars of 22 mm and above and seismic details, at higher cost. Lapping is cheapest but uses more steel and space, unsuitable for large bars. Welding depends heavily on operator skill and suffers in rain or cold.

### Is the coupler count the same as the splice count?

Normally yes, one per splice - including reducing couplers and left-right thread couplers, though their prices differ a lot. Each splice also needs exposed threads within about two pitches and torque-wrench sampling. Budget couplers by size.
