Chair Bar Calculator

Enter slab area, thickness and chair spacing to get the count, length per chair, total rebar length and weight.

Quick answer

With the default inputs: Slab area 100 m² · Slab thickness 0.12 · Chair spacing 1 etc.Total chair bar weight 17.9 kg

Edit the inputs below to recalculate.
Spacing sRun L
Stools are set at a pitch across the slab: count = area ÷ (pitch × row spacing). Height is slab depth minus top and bottom cover.

Inputs

m²
Typically 0.8-1.2 m; denser for thin slabs, wider for thick ones
The flat part carrying the top mat, usually 0.15-0.3 m

Result

Total chair bar weight
17.9kg
Chair bar count100pcs
Length per chair0.455m
Leg height0.090m
Total rebar length45.5m
Weight per m²0.18kg/m²
Weight per metre0.395kg/m

Assumes the common flat-top plus two 45° legs shape, excluding laps and waste. Other shapes (U-form, triangular, plastic chairs) have quite different lengths.

Formula

Chair countN = ceil(area ÷ spacing²)
Leg heighth = thickness − cover (top + bottom)
Length per chairL = top flat + 2 × h × √2
Total weightW = N × L × 0.00617 × d²
100 m² slab, 120 mm thick, chairs at 1 m, Φ8, 0.2 m top flat, 30 mm total cover: 100 chairs, 0.09 m legs, 0.4545 m each, 45.5 m total, 17.9 kg (about 0.18 kg/m²).

How to work it out

  1. Chair count N = ⌈slab area ÷ chair spacing²⌉. At 1 m spacing it is one per square metre; at 0.8 m about 1.56.
  2. Chair height h = slab depth − top and bottom cover combined. It is not the slab depth, or the top layer will protrude through the surface.
  3. Bar length L = top flat + 2 × h × √2 for a triangular chair, where h × √2 is the leg length.
  4. Total length = N × L; weight = total length × 0.00617 × d².
  5. The top flat runs 0.15-0.25 m, long enough to support the upper mesh — shorter and it slips off.

Where it goes wrong

Material and cost

Chairs are 3-6% of slab steel — a small quantity that must not be omitted. Φ8 runs about 1.6 per metre: a 100 m² slab at 1 m spacing and 120 mm deep takes about 100 chairs of 0.5 m, roughly 80 in material.

FAQ

Do chair bars count in the rebar total?
Yes. They carry no structural load but consume real material and labour. Convention is to list them as a separate 'temporary/positioning bars' line, or add 0.5-1% to the total. The length from this tool goes straight into the bar schedule.
What spacing should I use?
0.8-1.2 m both ways is normal. Thicker slabs and heavier top mats need tighter spacing; concentrate loads, cantilevers and construction-joint edges need 0.6-0.8 m. Too wide and the top mat sags, thinning the cover, which fails inspection.
Plastic chairs or steel chairs?
Plastic is cheap, non-corroding and fast, fine for 100-150 mm slabs. Steel chairs carry more load and can be tied or welded, suitable for thick slabs, long spans, vibration or heat. Plastic chairs come in fixed heights, so a thickness change means a model change.
