How this is worked out

Gallons = area x coats ÷ coverage. Coverage is the variable that bites: interior flat latex is labelled 350-400 ft²/gal, but textured walls, dark-over-light and spraying all come in below label, so 350 is the safer figure and exterior rough siding takes 250-300. Primer pays for itself: new drywall and patched areas are very absorbent, and without a primer coat the topcoat needs three passes, so total paint goes up and the colour goes patchy. The answer is rounded up to whole gallons because paint is not mixed in half gallons - leftover keeps for a year or two sealed and cool, and is worth keeping for touch-ups.

Formula

Coats = topcoats + primer if selected
Gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage
Whole gallons = round upno half-gallon mixing
Buckets = 5 gal pails + 1 gal cans
800 ft² at 2 coats and 350 ft²/gal: 2 x 800 / 350 = 4.6 gallons, so buy 5. Add a primer coat and it becomes 3 x 800 / 350 = 6.9, so 7 gallons.

How to work it out

  1. Work out the net paintable area: walls less openings, ceilings in full, summed across rooms.
  2. Set the coat count: two for a same-colour repaint, plus a primer on new work, dark-to-light or strong colours.
  3. Pick coverage: 400 ft²/gal on smooth, 300 on textured, 250 on rough exterior.
  4. Gallons = area x coats ÷ coverage, rounded up to whole gallons.
  5. Consider a 5 gal pail for one colour over a large area, and 1 gal cans where rooms differ.

Material and cost

Interior latex runs 25-50 a gallon mid-range and 60-90 premium, with 5 gal pails at 100-200. Primer is 20-35 a gallon. Painting labour including protection, filling and two coats commonly runs USD 2-4 per ft² of wall, and a whole house interior typically lands at 3000-8000.

FAQ

How many square feet does a gallon cover?
Interior flat latex is labelled 350-400 ft²/gal per coat. In practice 400 on smooth drywall, 300 on textured or previously painted walls and 250 on rough exterior boards. Dark to light and low-opacity pigments like reds and yellows cover less and may need three coats. Read the can, then order on the low side of it.
Is primer really necessary?
On new drywall, patched walls, bare timber and metal it is mandatory, and it saves money rather than costing it. Those substrates are so absorbent that the first topcoat is half drunk in, forcing two more coats to even out - more paint in total than primer plus two topcoats, plus the patchy sheen known as flashing. Same-colour repaints over sound old paint can skip it.
Is a 5 gallon pail worth it?
The unit price is typically 20-35% lower, but only if you genuinely need 5 gallons in one colour. A whole house in one off-white justifies a pail; several rooms in different colours does not. Also note a pail cannot be poured straight into a tray - decant it - and left open for two days it skins over, so seal it properly.
