Formula
| Metric | 1 m² = 10 000 cm² = 1 000 000 mm² |
| Land | 1 ha = 10 000 m² = 15 mu, 1 mu = 666.67 m² |
| Imperial | 1 ft² = 144 in² = 0.092903 m², 1 yd² = 9 ft² |
| Acre | 1 acre = 4 840 yd² = 4 046.86 m² ≈ 6.07 mu |
| General rule | target = source value × source factor ÷ target factor |

How to work it out
- Within metric: 1 m² = 10,000 cm² = 1,000,000 mm², and 1 km² = 1,000,000 m². Area scales as the square of length, so the steps are 100 and a million, not 10 and a thousand.
- For land, anchor on one relationship: 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 15 mu, so 1 mu = 666.67 m². This is the workhorse conversion for Chinese land and compensation work.
- Imperial: 1 ft² = 144 in² = 0.092903 m², and 1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.836127 m². Imperial drawings are often in ft², and estate agents quote sq ft.
- Acre: 1 acre = 4840 yd² = 4046.86 m², about 6.07 mu. Overseas farm and plot areas use acres, which do not map directly onto the Chinese mu.
- General form: target = source × source factor ÷ target factor, where each factor is how many square metres one unit represents.
- Check the magnitude: 100 m² is about 1076 ft² and about 0.15 mu. A wrong order of magnitude means a wrong factor.
Where it goes wrong
- Applying the linear step to areas. Since 1 m = 100 cm, people assume 1 m² = 100 cm²; it is 10,000 cm², a hundredfold error.
- Treating the mu as an are. The mu is 666.67 m² and the are is 100 m², a factor of 6.67. Foreign documents saying are do not mean mu.
- Reversing the hectare-to-mu direction. One hectare is 15 mu, so 100 mu is 6.67 hectares, not 1500. In land acquisition that error is enormous.
- Rounding an acre to 4000 m². At 4046.86 m² the error is 47 m² — trivial on a plot, but tens of thousands of square metres across a large farm.
- Mixing construction area with footprint. Construction area is summed floor by floor per GB/T 50353 while footprint is the building base; for one building they can differ tenfold.
Material and cost
An area unit error shifts the answer by one or two orders of magnitude. At 3000 CNY/m², reading 100 m² as 1000 m² mis-states a quote by 2.7 million. In compensation priced by the mu, reversing hectares and mu is a factor of tens.
On site
- Land acquisition, agriculture and forestry use the mu; planning and construction use hectares and square metres; sales use square metres; English-language sources use sq ft and acres. Identify the system before converting.
- Two anchors cover most domestic land work: one mu is about 667 m², and one hectare is 15 mu.
- Drawings distinguish construction area, usable area, net internal area and footprint. These are not convertible — each is calculated separately.
- In fit-out quotes, developed area versus plan area makes a big difference, especially for cabinetry. Confirming which basis applies matters more than converting units.
