Engineering quantities use kilograms and tonnes. Chinese units such as jin and liang appear only in small trades and never in structural or settlement documents.

How to work it out
- Metric: 1 t = 1000 kg = 1,000,000 g, and 1 quintal (q) = 100 kg. Steel, cement and aggregate are traded by the tonne in construction.
- Chinese municipal units: 1 jin = 500 g, 1 liang = 50 g, ten liang to the jin. Markets and legacy material lists use these, and 1 tonne is 2000 jin.
- Imperial: 1 lb = 16 oz = 0.453592 kg, and 1 oz = 28.3495 g. Imperial drawings sometimes give reinforcement rates and loads in lb and psf.
- Three tonnes must be distinguished: the metric tonne at 1000 kg, the long ton at 1016.05 kg, and the short ton at 907.18 kg — roughly 10% apart, the classic trap in imported equipment and scrap pricing.
- Densities worth knowing: concrete 2.4 t/m³ (reinforced 2.5), sand 1.5, crushed stone 1.5-1.6, steel 7.85, water 1.0, loose cement 1.3, lime 1.2.
- Check: 1 t is about 2205 lb, and 1 jin is 0.5 kg. A wrong order means the wrong ton.
Where it goes wrong
- Treating a short ton as a metric tonne. At 907 kg it is 9.3% lighter, so equipment rated in short tons and read as metric understates lifting load by nearly a tenth.
- Misremembering rebar unit weight. φ20 deformed bar is 2.47 kg/m — not 2.0 and not 3.0 — while φ12 is 0.888 and φ25 is 3.85. One wrong size corrupts the whole schedule.
- Mixing jin and kilogram. A quote of 3 CNY per jin is 6 CNY/kg, not 3, and this is the commonest error on purchase orders.
- Multiplying bulk volume by density without allowing for voids. Loose aggregate is 30-40% voids, so 1 m³ of loose stone is only 0.6-0.7 m³ of solid, and back-calculating volume from weight at 1.5 t/m³ drifts.
- Confusing load with mass. kN is force and kg is mass; a 1 t mass produces 9.8 kN of weight. Using 10 kN as an estimate is fine, but kN is not kg.
Material and cost
Steel trades by the tonne at around 4200 CNY, so on a 1000 t project a metric-versus-short-ton confusion is 400,000 CNY. Aggregate priced by weight versus volume differs by about 50%, and that is the item most disputed at settlement.
On site
- Rebar unit weight is d² × 0.00617 with d in millimetres: φ20 gives 400 × 0.00617 = 2.468 kg/m, matching the code table and easy to do mentally on site.
- Know the common sections too: L50×5 angle at 3.77 kg/m, 10# channel at 10.0, 20a I-beam at 27.9, HN400×200 at 66 kg/m.
- Quick pound conversion: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb and 1 lb ≈ 0.45 kg. Divide by 2.2 and you are within 1%.
- Check whether delivery weight is gross or net. Steel settles either by weighbridge ticket or by theoretical weight, and the two differ by 3-5% through negative tolerance.
