Net area = perimeter × height − openings. Three cautions: window reveals and sills are usually tiled too and must be added; door openings are often not deducted because architraves cover them and deducting tends to undersupply; and waste runs 5-8% for straight lay, 12-15% for diagonal or herringbone and 10% for large format cuts. Never mix batches on one wall, and keep 2-3 spares.

Formula
| Net area = perimeter × height − openings | |
| Pieces = net area ÷ (tile length × width) | |
| Count = ceil(pieces × (1+waste)) | |
| Boxes = ceil(count ÷ pieces per box) |
How to work it out
- Net area = wall perimeter × tiling height − opening area. Take the height from the design: 2.4 m in bathrooms, up to the ceiling in kitchens.
- The critical addition: the reveals of openings get tiled too, so add (opening perimeter × wall thickness) for each one. This is routinely missed and a single window reveal is 0.5-1 m².
- Divide the net area by the tile area for a theoretical count.
- Add 8-10% waste: wall tiling needs holes for pipes and boxes and mitred or trimmed external corners, so it wastes more than floors.
- Divide by tiles per box and round up. Borders and feature tiles are counted separately by length or piece.
Where it goes wrong
- Deducting the opening but not adding the reveal — a 1.5 × 1.5 m window in a 200 mm wall has 1.2 m² of reveal; two windows is 2.4 m², half a wall's worth.
- Allowing 5% waste — wall tiling has more holes and corner cuts, so 5% usually falls short and 8-10% is the norm.
- Ignoring external corners — a mitre removes a tile thickness along each edge, at least 0.1 m² per metre of corner; trim pieces are a separate purchase.
- Combining wall and floor tiles in one figure — different sizes, waste and prices; a combined total leaves one of them short.
Material and cost
300×600 wall tile 25-60 CNY/m², 400×800 40-90. Labour 40-60 CNY/m², mitred corners add 15-25 per metre. Adhesive 8-15 CNY/m², trim 5-15 per metre.
On site
- Waterproof and flood-test bathroom walls before tiling; reversing the order means demolishing the tiles.
- Start each wall with a full tile at the internal corner and leave cuts at external corners or out-of-sight edges — the visual difference is large.
- Choose whether floor tiles run under the wall tiles or vice versa and keep to it; changing mid-job misaligns every joint.
